Roli Varma

University of New Mexico

The issue of underrepresentation of women in informationtechnology (IT) is of national interest due to therapid growth of IT in recent years, the impact of IT ongrowth and productivity, the shortage of IT workers, and the gender equity in IT. Scholarly research haspointed its finger at bias in early socialization, mathanxiety, masculinity of computers, the scarcity of rolemodels, and women's preference for relational work.A study of students majoring in computer science andcomputer engineering in a minority-serving universityfound some additional factors such as tension betweendemands imposed by IT curricula and students'familyand work responsibilities.

Key Words: computer access • gender socialization • geek mythology • ethnicity in information technology
